The Garden Club of Hartford has learned from more than 100 years of experience in the field that our best work comes from true partnerships.
We partner with groups in the community to teach what we know about gardening and conservation, to work toward solutions for civic issues, and to improve life in the Hartford and Greater Hartford areas.
Civic Improvement
Recently we worked with the City of Hartford, Friends of Keney Park, Keney Park Sustainability Project, and neighborhood residents to refurbish the five entrances to the park in keeping with Frederick Law Olmsted’s tenets of natural plantings.
We removed invasive species, planted native species according to the designs of a team of Harvard Landscape Design students, and taught parks workers the importance of biodiversity in landscapes and sustainable management practices.
Currently we are working with the Hartford Public Library Park Street @ The Lyric branch librarians on a project to plant the raised beds of their courtyard and develop a children’s curriculum on pollinator-attractive plants, herbs, and vegetables useful in Latino cooking.
“Thank you to The Garden Club of Hartford for their continued partnership and for enriching our outdoor spaces and bringing new life to our library grounds. This partnership not only enhances the gardens around our buildings but also provides meaningful programming that connects our community to nature, learning and one another.” Bridget E. Quinn, HPL President & CEO
The work at the Park Street @ The Lyric branch has inspired us to expand this project to the downtown branch of the library.

Conservation
We educate our members in best practices to restore and protect our natural resources and the environment.
Floral Design
We learn about the art of floral design through participation in workshops and floral design activities such as club challenges and sweepstakes. Members are also encouraged to participate in GCA flower shows at the zone and national level.
Photography
We further the knowledge and love of gardening and the natural landscape through photography. It promotes the art and science of photography at all skill levels through education.
Horticulture
We provide opportunities for our members to exercise and stimulate their knowledge of gardening by providing workshops and educational opportunities to our members such as the annual Greens Workshop.
Visiting Gardens
We plan trips both locally and abroad to educate members our clubs in garden history and design, horticulture, and the environment.
